Overnight Oats for Newbies: My Fool-Proof No-Recipe Recipe

First of all, that’s not a typo: this is my no-recipe overnight oats recipe. Yep, I normally just wing it in the kitchen – and I’m not just talking about this food in particular. With the exception of baking and maybe bartending, I believe in the freedom of playing around with recipes to suit your own preferences.
With that in mind, I wanna share how I make my overnight oats. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably seen me share a couple of pictures and videos of what I whip up in the kitchen. I’m no pro, but I do have a special place in my life for food: both making and consuming them.
That ONE Thing
My lazy girl version of overnight oats is: always remember that 1:1 is key. Make sure you’ve got rolled oats in equal proportion to your liquid. However, you can make it thicker or runnier as you please. Other than cow’s milk, you can try almond milk (which I prefer the most!), coconut milk, soy milk, or even plain old water. Some swear by orange juice or half and half. Have fun and experiment!
I actually like mixing either some protein shake powder or Greek yogurt. In this case, it’s a tablespoon of flavored protein shake powder (I use Herbalife F1 in Dutch Chocolate) or 1 container of Greek yogurt (I use the 125g container of Nestlé Greek Flavored Yogurt), in addition to the almond milk I use.
Isn’t It SWEET?
We all know rolled oats and oatmeal in general is pretty bland. I’m not gonna lie. So it’s okay to sweeten it a little bit. I personally use honey, but other options could be agave, maple syrup, brown sugar, or even jam. If you’re fancy, maybe try some vanilla extract, cinnamon, or nut butter.
Don’t Forget to HYDRATE
You know what works great in overnight oats? Things that absorb liquids. Chia seeds are awesome, and you can also try dried fruit, or even nuts. Flax and sunflower seeds are popular options too, and slivers of almonds actually add an interesting texture. Dried fruit like raisins, blueberries, cherries, and cranberries add awesome flavor, and they reconstitute and puff back up when soaked overnight.
The Right MIX
Make sure to stir well and cover your jar or container tightly, and then let it sit overnight in your fridge. While layering them in a mason jar is cute on the ‘Gram, I’m not so sure it’s going to taste as amazing as opposed to actually mixing it all up.
TOP of the Morning
When you take your overnight oats, they can either be ready to eat or you can add more to it upon serving. More fruit, honey, granola, or peanut butter, perhaps? Just be sure not to be overly generous – it can get dangerous when you’re freestyling, as you might not be conscious of how much sugar or calories you may be adding. If you’re watching your health and weight, try to use ingredients sparingly.
